Police Authority praised for ‘value for money’ services

RESIDENTS in Lancashire are continuing to receive value for money for policing services, according to government watchdogs.
In its annual assessment of Lancashire Police Authority’s accounts, the Audit Commission praised the organisation for its efforts in making efficiency savings and scrutinising spending.
It also recognised the Authority’s work to reduce the environmental impact of policing activities and its understanding of diverse communities.
The report said Lancashire’s use of resources secured “economy, efficiency and effectiveness” against the criteria set out by the Audit Commission.
“The Authority has strong financial arrangements in place to support delivery of strategic objectives,” it said.
“It has sound financial health and a good track record of managing spending within budgets.”
The Commission said the Authority had a well-established approach for reducing the environmental impact of its activities and had received awards for the work.
It highlighted Lancashire’s use of databases recording energy and water use which identify the least and most energy-efficient buildings and noted how Co2 vehicle fleet emissions had fallen since 2007.
“Environmental sustainability awareness is strong across the organisation,” the report added.
The Audit Commission also said the authority and force’s use of performance data to routinely monitor policing areas was helping to drive up performance and value for money in key priority areas.
Lancashire Police Authority chairman, Cllr Malcolm Doherty, said the Audit Commission’s findings were encouraging and demonstrated the Authority’s commitment to delivering value for money policing services without compromising quality.
“Residents can be confident that their police authority is continuously striving to improve services while still maintaining a prudent attitude to spending,” he said.
“Like all police authorities, Lancashire faces a tough financial future and our strategic leadership will be vital to ensure the force achieves best possible value for money, while delivering a service that meets the needs of Lancashire residents and keeps them safe.”
In its conclusions, the Audit Commission said Lancashire’s Policing Plan sets out a clear vision and understanding of local policing priorities.
“The Plan shows a good understanding of diverse communities and targeted responses through neighbourhood policing are delivering benefits. Strong examples of working with partners are helping deliver improved outcomes locally,” it added.
