When did you last visit your local police station?
Written by Cllr Malcolm Doherty - Police Authority Chair
Local Police Stations are important to people - we know and fully understand that, but how often do they actually get used?
Our review found that 81% of the total number of visitors across the county went to just 17 of the front counters. The remaining 21 counters handled only 19% of the overall footfall. That’s why the Authority and the Constabulary are considering closing those with the lowest number of visitors.
No decisions have been made, and they won’t be until we have consulted local people and partners to find out what they think and look at alternative solutions.
It’s certainly true that thanks to Authority investment in new technology and neighbourhood policing that the police themselves are more accessible and visible. New and evolving ways of communicating, including websites, emails, social media and text messaging mean that people don’t often need to actually talk in person at their local station.
As the funding cuts bite, we have to find ways of making the best use of the resources at our disposal, and to do this properly, we want to find out what you think first. That is why 1 July saw the launch of an extensive three month period of consultation.

I have never visited a police station but I do like the idea that I have one where I live. I think its great that the police are using new technology more but to me, a staffed police station is a focus for people in a community and a deterant to criminals. Greater access by other methods is good but should not come at the expense of police stations.
